If your speaking business deals with the public, you actually make lots of rules. Your web site contains pages dictating terms and conditions and your privacy practices. You send clients information explaining the conditions around the way you work. You have a cancellation and refund policy. Before giving a seminar, you send instructions to participants on how to prepare. We all have to do it; it's impossible to operate without rules.
But how are those rules heard by others? Too often our rules sound overly aggressive or confrontational—not because we want to come across that way, but simply because we didn't pay attention to the tone of voice.
